WSP Activity Bulletin: April and May

Activity Bulletin collage

Welcome to the latest activity bulletin by the team at Westmeath Sports Partnership.

April and May saw lots of courses and programmes in various parts of Co. Westmeath led, and supported, by the team at Westmeath Sports Partnership.

Below you will find just a sample of some of the work we have been doing in the last number of weeks with communities and groups throughout the county.

And, don’t forget that there is lots more to come in our next activity bulletin in just a few weeks’ time.

Ukrainian Community In Mullingar Forest Experience Programme

We were delighted to be able to provide a wonderful outdoors experience for some Ukrainian parents and children during April and May.

The sessions were led by Ross in the Free Range Forest School and everyone had a wonderful time at the beautiful and tranquil Mullaghmeen Forest.

Junior Parkrun Comes To Mullingar

The tireless volunteers who organise Parkrun in Mullingar each Saturday were given a huge boost in April with confirmation of a junior event for children and teens.

The Westmeath Sports Partnership has been a long-time supporter of the Parkrun family in Co. Westmeath, and was especially delighted with the news.

The first event on April 23 was a massive success, and it’s sure to go from strength to strength in the coming weeks’ and months.

Self-Defence Classes Move Outdoors

We were delighted to be able to offer self-defence and physical activity classes in April and at the end of the month, it was time to move outdoors.

Thanks to tutor Ken, the ladies enjoyed several weeks’ of walks and activities on the greenway in Mullingar.

Sports Development Conference

Westmeath Sport Partnership’s Sports Development team was delighted to be able to attend the recent Sport Development Conference hosted by Sport Ireland

Lots of really interesting conversations and debates about the future of sport and the power & impact of sports development, as well as community engagement took place across the two days.

Pictured below are Sports Inclusion Development Officer (SIDO) Mary Duignan; Community Sports Development Officer (CSDO) Martina O’Brien and Outdoors Development Officer (ODO), Cian Fogarty.

Active Schools’ Week

Once again dozens of children from all across Co. Westmeath were out and about at the end of April as part of Active Schools’ week.

Thanks so much to everyone who shared their activities during the week and got up and moving in and out of the classrooms.

Club Grants 2023

May was a very exciting month for over 70 clubs and organisations as they received money from our latest round of Club Grants.

A total of €27,000 was shared among clubs across the county with money used for a range of initiatives; to attract new members and to enhance ongoing participation.

You can find a full list of details of all the successful clubs here

Bike Week 2023

May saw the largest number of groups, communities, schools and individuals EVER taking part in Bike Week events locally.

We were delighted to be able to provide funding and support for over thirty events all across Co. Westmeath.

We also had dozens of people also enter our special competition to see who could cycle the farthest during the course of the week.

Well done to Theresa Parker and Helena Connell for putting their rubber to the road during the week.

Africa Day

Thanks to our good friends at Offaly Sports Partnership, we had the chance to offer two schools the chance to take part in Africa Day events at the athletics track of Tullamore Harriers in late May.

It’s fair to say that pupils from Mullingar Educate Together and St Mary’s NS, Athlone, had a brilliant time.

Active Disability Training

It’s very important that more opportunities are afforded to people with disabilities and additional needs to get involved in sport.

We had a fantastic turnout at St Mary’s GAA club in Rochfortbridge for special training from Active Disability Ireland to develop coaches and trainers in the area of sports inclusion.

More To Come

Summertime means we start our watersports activities and we will also be running various different events in communities throughout the county in the coming weeks thanks to the fine weather (fingers crossed) and the longer evenings.

The best place to keep up to date with all the information is right here on the Westmeath Sports Partnership website, or through our social media channels on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Alternatively, you can always email us at info@westmeathsports.ie.

We look forward to our next activity bulletin at the end of July.
