Westmeath Sports Partnership is thrilled to announce it has been successful in applying for funding to enhance community sports facilities through additional sports equipment infrastructure in two locations in Co. Westmeath.
Over €65,000 (€65250) has been allocated to develop community sports facilities and biodiversity initiatives, through the Participation Nation funding. This initiative aims to promote physical activity, well-being, and environmental sustainability across Ireland, and Westmeath is proud to be part of this movement.
€48,750 is being allocated to the purchase and installation of permanent sport equipment with a further €16,500 for biodiversity measures awarded funding under the Amuigh Faoin Spéir Funding Scheme 2024.
New Additions in Killucan and Battery Heights
Killucan and Battery Heights in Athlone have been selected for significant upgrades, ensuring that residents have access to high-quality sports equipment and facilities, as well as enhanced green spaces.
Key Features of the Upgrades:
- Box Up Units: These innovative storage solutions will provide secure and easy access to sports equipment. The BoxUp units will encourage regular use by making equipment readily available for community members.
- Surfacing and Fencing: To ensure safety and enhance the usability of the new equipment, upgrades will also take place to create a secure environment for all users, making the facilities more inviting and accessible.
Biodiversity Enhancements
In addition to the sports equipment, there are exciting biodiversity projects planned for both Killucan and Battery Heights with funding approved for works totalling €16,500 which will include efforts to support local wildlife and contribute to the ecological health of the area.
Impact on the Community
These upgrades are more than just physical improvements; they represent a commitment to fostering a healthier, more active, and environmentally conscious community. By providing high-quality sports equipment, safe and accessible spaces, and enhanced green areas, we aim to inspire more people to participate in physical activities and appreciate the natural environment, regardless of their background or abilities.
The enhancements in Killucan and Battery Heights are part of a broader effort to ensure that everyone in Westmeath has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of regular physical activity and a healthy environment. We believe that these new facilities will become central hubs for community engagement, promoting not only physical health but also social well-being and environmental stewardship.
Looking Ahead
Westmeath Sports Partnership is dedicated to continuing our work in improving sports infrastructure and promoting active lifestyles, as well as supporting biodiversity and sustainability initiatives. We are grateful for the support from the Participation Nation funding and look forward to seeing the positive impact these new facilities and projects will have on our community.
